First Step helps client lose 8 stone (52Kg) in weight

In July 2009 Matt Goodstadt decided to join First Step Gym to lose weight and improve fitness. Having not done any serious exercise since his early twenties Matt had slowly put weight on over the years, peaking at 22 ½ stone (143kg). Matt explains “With a job as a travelling salesman it was all too easy to snack in the car, eat fatty food and have a few drinks every night in hotels, the weight just crept on.

Matt continues, “Joining First Step was the best thing I ever did, I had joined a well-known national chain of gyms near work in Bristol a few years previously, but I didn’t stick with it for long. First Step was completely different, it is such a friendly place, and you get that personal touch from the staff. From the moment I walked in I felt I was not being judged for my weight, and all the clients seemed really friendly, not full of the super fit, perfect body types you get at some gyms.”

Matt was given an induction by Will Edwards, First Steps Owner, talking about what he wanted to achieve, and how that could be done, fitting around Matt’s busy work commitments. Will then designed a program specifically to meet those needs.

Will comments “We are a small team who work really hard to get to know our clients, and what they are looking to achieve, that allows us to tailor programs specifically to them, reviewing them regularly and keeping them motivated.”

Matt elaborates “Will was very clever, giving me a program that was pitched just right, so I could improve, but without it being so hard I would give up” Over the next few years Matt lost 2 ½ stone in weight (16kg)

By September 2013 Matt had built up a lot more fitness and confidence and decided to try some of the classes at First Step to accelerate his weight loss, starting with Boxercise. “The classes were so much fun, and are planned to allow each person to take part regardless of their fitness level, as you improve you can do more.” Matt added Pump and Circuits classes and his fitness and weight loss increased very quickly. “The other clients were so supportive in class, really encouraging and motivating me, a real family feel, an atmosphere fostered by the First Step team.”

In conjunction with using First Step’s wide range of classes, Matt sought Will’s advice on his diet and nutrition. The combination of increased exercise intensity and good nutrition hastened Matt’s weight loss, and over the next 18 months, with the support of the First Step team, clients and his family, Matt lost a further 5 ½ stone (36Kg). “I cannot thank Will, Hollie, the First Step Team and clients enough for helping me make such a positive impact on my life, I have no doubt I have made a change which will improve my quality and length of life”

At 6ft 1in tall, currently weighing 14st 5lb with 22% body fat, Matt is happy with his weight, and with the help of a weekly Personal Training session from Will, aims to reduce his body fat percentage through increasing muscle mass and toning.
